I have been looking for a while to where I fit in on the political landscape. There is so much dogma and rigidity around the camps as they currently exist. Marxist Socialists or Pluralist Liberalism, Anarcho-Humanist or Enlightenment Rationalist. None of these really fit, like a shirt whose sleeves are too long or the mid section too snug for comfortable breathing.
Here is my personal political ideology that in my belief will bring about the best good for the most people and provide a future with which we actually move towards a flourishing society, not this limping cancerous disease ridden mess that we currently find ourselves in with Neo-Liberal Capitalism.
My ideology would be best described as:
- Baseline human dignity for all. Regardless of origin, creed, status, race, or ability, every person deserves to be treated as if their life mattered just a much as any other.
- The most good, for the most people.
- These next two are quite like the old adage, “From each according to their ability, to each according to their need.” Though I think that would only work in a true post scarcity model, of which we definitely aren’t there yet. In the mean time a more simplistic view could be:
- Equal share for all – no more hoarding wealth in the 1% while people starve and struggle.
- Equal work for all, scaled for ability – no more investors and CEOs sitting back reaping the benefits of everyone else’s labour.
- A sizeable portion of our lives should be dedicated to non-“productive” time such as art & creativity with no specific end goal, the antithesis of the profit motive, if something beneficial is created then this should be celebrated and fostered.
- Empathy & true connection will endear and allow for unity between humanity.
- No belief is above questioning.
- Protect against the oppression of the majority.
- Differentiation will get the most from those with differing needs.
On the whole it’s a very progressive leftist leaning ideology. I think we can move beyond the profit motive, it had it’s day we got out from under the thumb of tyrants and kings but the constant push for capital is now swinging us back the other way under the thumb of the fiefs with the most money to throw around. Monopolies are rife in the modern day, no one can go against Google search, YouTube, Meta, Twitter, TSMC, the US hegemony, OPEC cartel; we need a larger cultural shift towards community and sharing.
We’ve grown too comfortable in our consumerism and individualism, we need to move back towards human connection dealing with the friction of having our needs directly compared and seeing where they converge, balancing the needs of many against just ensuring we fully take care of all of our wants.
This is no bullet proof list, nor does it point to some system for solving all our earthly issues. But it’s a move in a more human first approach where people aren’t just discarded and forgotten because they can’t produce “value” for those with capital.
